Pastor Joy Kuriah operates The Father’s Delight in Ol Kalou, Kenya.

This is a rural community about 3 ½ hours from Nairobi. We met Joy in 2010 on a Bethel mission trip. Until 2019 her focus had been to run a home for orphans, and to help impoverished families. In 2019 the government decided to shut down many of these homes and return children to any surviving family. Pastor Joy complied with those orders. She then committed herself to help the children and single parents in the relief of poverty by: 1. Starting two learning centers that are geared to provide education for 100 children and were opened January 6, 2020.

One centre has the preschool and kindergarten and the other centre has kindergarten to grade 2. When we visited the centres, Pastor Joy had 82 students and no regular support. The needs are huge in this particular area, which is also Pastor Joy’s hometown. In each subsequent year Pastor Joy hopes to add one grade until grade 8 which is the students last year in school. A few students may go to a boarding school in a larger centre to complete grades 9 to 12. This is only possible if a donor is willing to pay the student’s tuition and room and board as the cost is unaffordable for these families. Each child attending the centre brings 50 cents a day and for that, breakfast and lunch are provided. No tuition or other fees are charged. Pastor Joy is hoping to soon be able to provide another meal before the students return home. The learning centre that houses the preschool and kindergarten students was just built on leased land in December 2019 and consists of 3 buildings ---two are classrooms and one is for administration. 2 Pastor Joy is hoping that the larger classroom will soon be available for a community church service and other community activities. The other learning centre for kindergarten to grade 2 is situated on Pastor Joy’s family land and it consists of 3 classrooms and a kitchen where the cook prepares the food for the children over an open fire. 2. It is Pastor Joy’s intent to help a growing number of impoverished single parent families in the community. There are many ways to help, for example, Pastor Joy provides seed and fertilizer to these families so they can grow their own food. As well, and, as she can afford, she provides a package of supplies they need (things they can’t grow) such as flour, rice, soap, lard etc. The price varies according to the size of the family but it would cost her around $10 USD per family for a typical package. A stipulation on these packages is that the children attend school. Pastor Joy also supplies chickens to some families, and occasionally a goat to another. She tries to assist the single parents to find some kind of job in order to have a regular income. Pastor Joy sees education as the long term key to reduction of poverty and seeks to provide the education for the children through her learning centers. The children from these families (above grade 2) attend the public school system but need funds for their tuition, uniforms etc. As funds are available, Pastor Joy envisions a rain collection system for each family to have easily accessible drinking water in these humble homes. 3. When able to find donors, Pastor Joy provides funds for education for a few gifted children to attend grades 9-12.
